We all act differently to our children starting school – relief that we will have a bit of time, worry about how our child will settle in, grief that in some way we are losing part of our child to an ‘unknown.’ All these feelings and more are quite normal and because our lives are not identical, none of us will feel exactly the same way. Some parents are quite surprised at how little or much they do feel. We have to remember, especially if this is our first child at school that this is a new era for ourselves as well. Teachers feel that it is best for children to settle in for the first few weeks, and then you will be most welcome to come in and help in the classroom with reading. If however you do feel anxious – feel free to talk to your child’s teacher. It is also good to talk to other parents. We have all been through the experience and are happy to share yours.
